In Literacy this week Year 6 have be learning all about debates. Why we have them, how they work and how the result is found. We held 2 debates on different topics:
Motion 1 Pupils should be allowed to select the subjects they wish to learn. With 8 votes for and 15 against, the motion was carried that pupils should not be allowed to select the subjects they wish to learn.
Motion 2 The legal age to drive should be 16. With 3 people voting for and 20 against, the motion was carried that the age legally required to drive should not be 16.
Both topics had been researched and some very good points were made by both sides for and against the motions.
What did we learn?
I have realised to be in a debate you have to be incredibly sensible and that it’s a serious matter. I’ve also learnt you don’t just vote for the team your friends are on but who you actually think is right. (Erin James)
I learnt how a debate is held and what a proposer and opposer is. I also found out about the Speaker and the Teller and what they do. (Lauren Ryall)
